What is Title I?

Title I is a federally-funded program designed to ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and reach, at a minimum, proficiency on challenging state academic achievement standards and state academic assessments. Title I is an instructional program designed, in consultation with parents, staff, and district staff, to meet the needs of students who would benefit from additional help in reading or math. Title I programs must use instructional strategies based on scientifically-based research and implement parental involvement activities.

Report Suspected Fraud, Waste or Abuse to the U.S. Department of Education Office of Inspector General

The OIG Hotline is available for anyone who knows of or suspects fraud, waste, abuse, mismanagement, or violations of laws and regulations involving U.S. Department of Education funds or programs. This includes allegations of suspected wrongdoing by Department employees, contractors, grantees, schools and school officials, persons in positions of trust involving Department funds or programs, collections agencies, recipients of student financial assistance, or lending institutions. If you have knowledge of any wrongdoing involving Department funds or operations, let us know!

How are Title I Students Identified?

Students are selected to receive Title I services based on a number of qualifying criteria, including standardized tests, district assessments, classroom assessments and teacher recommendation.

Although funding for Title I is related to the number of students who receive free or reduced price lunch, participation in the program does not correlate with economic status.

Parental Involvement

Parental involvement is vital and contributes significantly to the success of the student in the Title I program. Parents are notified by the classroom teacher when their child qualifies for Title I support and are informed about Title I services through parent meetings, conferences, newsletters, emails and phone calls. We encourage parents to discuss their child’s strengths and needs with the classroom teacher.
