Over the past few years, and under the guidance of the current administration, our District has demonstrated strong financial stewardship. We have made difficult budget cuts, reduced spending, and we are living within our means. All of this has helped us to climb out of statutory operating debt, and for the first time since 2017, we have a positive fund balance. That progress is thanks to careful planning, the continued support of a generous and engaged community, and a commitment to doing what’s best for our kids, even during lean times.
Starting from a position in the bottom 2% of all districts in terms of state funding—due to how funding is allocated and the demographics of our community—we have now reached a critical juncture. In order to preserve current class sizes, sustain the high-quality educational programs our community values, and continue attracting and retaining outstanding teachers and staff, additional long-term funding is essential.
The District has already taken extensive steps to reduce spending in ways that protect students and classrooms, but further reductions could directly impact the quality of an ISD 110 education. A recent survey indicated that nearly 90% of parents believe their child is receiving a high-quality education in Waconia Public Schools. This November, we are asking voters to consider a $3 million operating levy–not to expand programming, but to maintain that excellence our community has come to expect.
