Accounting I

Accounting is an essential aspect of every business institution and organization. Any student interested in any aspect of business and/or are planning to study business courses in college (accounting, business administration, economics, finance, management, or marketing) will need a strong background in accounting. This course introduces the basic accounting procedures used to operate a service business organized as a proprietorship. It covers the complete accounting cycle in a simplified manner through a combination journal. Topics include the analysis of business transactions, recording transactions in a journal, and preparing financial reports. Students should follow up Accounting I with Accounting II.

Accounting II
Open to Grades 9–12

Prerequisite: Accounting I
This course is a continuation of Accounting I, elaborating on the accounting cycle for a merchandising business organized as a corporation. Topics include special journals, accounts receivable, accounts payable, sales, purchases, allowances, discounts, payroll, depreciation, uncollectible accounts, plant assets, depreciation, merchandise inventory, notes, interest, accrued revenue and expenses, and end-of-fiscal-period work for a corporation.

Dollars and Sense
Open to Grades 9–12

Prerequisite: None
This course will teach you how to handle your day-to-day finances. Become a better manager of your money by learning more about banking services, maintaining a realistic budget, purchasing a vehicle, completing income taxes, and deciding whether or not to purchase a house.
Entertainment Marketing
Open to Grades 9–12
1 Trimester Period, 1 Credit
Prerequisite: None
This course explores how entertainment and sports marketing transformed into a billion-dollar industry that is exported to all countries of the world. Students will research how the media attempts to influence young viewers, evaluate nonverbal communication in relation to marketing strategies, compare advertising techniques from various entertainment outlets, and decipher the societal impact of the music, sports, and entertainment industries. Field trips are possible.

Starting Your Own Business
Open to Grades 9–12

Prerequisite: None
The objective of this course is to help the student explore the possibility of starting their own small business. The course would define the academic skills, management concepts and practices, and personal traits necessary to begin a small business. The course will stress initiative, creativity, problem-solving skills, and the need for ongoing education to adapt to global changes, which would be beneficial for any student.

Personal Law

Personal Law is a brief introduction to Minnesota's legal system, with an emphasis on personal law questions concerning juvenile, parent and child, marriage and dissolution, consumer law, and landlord/tenant responsibilities.
Trends in Business and Management

Prerequisite: None
The world certainly has changed since the dinosaurs roamed the earth. Imagine how it will look 10, 50, and 100 years from now! This course will examine this transformation from a business management point of view. Societal issues to be studied include ethics in the business world, business scandals, and growing corporate empires in the videogame and fashion industry. Classroom participation and field trips are a mandatory part of this course.

Work Experience
Open to Grade 12
1–3 Trimester Period(s), 1–3 Credit(s)
Prerequisite: Steady Employment
This program is open to eligible seniors who desire developing occupational proficiency through community job experiences. An on-the-job training agreement is agreed upon between the school and the employer. Students must be employed an average of 10 hours per week. The classroom seminar meets twice a week, and students are released early to go to work. Topics covered include career planning, job seeking and keeping skills, job satisfaction, job-related communication skills, and managing your income.
