Phenix and Trapp Named AAA Award Recipients
Congratulations to Waconia High School seniors Jonathan Phenix and Bennett Trapp, who have been named the school’s 2025-26 AAA Award recipients.
Established in 1988, the Academics, Arts and Athletics Award (Triple “A”) is a unique recognition program sponsored by the MSHSL. The award goes to high school seniors who have at least a 3.0 or better grade point average and who are active in fine arts and athletic activities. The purpose of this program is to recognize and honor high school seniors who have excelled in the classroom, on the athletic field, and in fine arts, as well as to elevate academic standards and create greater awareness of the value of high school activities.
Phenix plays the tenor saxophone in the Waconia High School wind ensemble and jazz band, is a member of the Wildcat track and field team, and has taken a number of advanced placement and concurrent college enrollment courses while maintaining a 3.7 grade point average. Phenix is planning to attend South Dakota State University to study environmental science next fall.
“Jonathan is a leader among his peers with an infectious level of enthusiasm, dignity, and positivity. He is thoughtful, listens, and advocates for his ideas and those of whom he leads,” said WHS Teacher and band director Nick Hansberry. “Jonathan is a constant and positive force within our band and school community. He is constantly challenging himself, seeks improvement, and readily applies constructive feedback.”
Trapp has an extensive background in the arts as she has participated in Waconia High School’s select chamber choir, show choir, wind ensemble, jazz band, and marching band, along with playing lead roles in the school’s theater productions. Athletically, she participated in cross country for one year and track and field for two years. In the classroom she takes a number of advanced placement and concurrent college enrollment classes while maintaining a 3.8 grade point average. Trapp is finalizing college plans for next year and intends to pursue a biology degree on a pre-med track.
“In the realm of the arts, Bennett has distinguished herself as an outstanding and accomplished musician. She is selfless in regards to her participation and leadership in our ensembles,” said WHS teacher and choir director Aaron Olson. “Throughout her academic career, Bennett has been an exceptional student characterized by hard work, motivation, and a profound commitment to excellence. She is a student who not only sets high expectations for herself, but also elevates the people and programs around her.”
The MSHSL will announce the 32 AAA Finalists - one male and one female from each region - later this spring. Four statewide winners will then be announced and be eligible to receive a four-year $1,000 scholarship.
