ELIZABETH ELDRED NAMED NATIONAL MERIT SEMIFINALIST
Waconia Public Schools is proud to announce that Waconia High School senior Elizabeth Eldred has been named a National Merit Semifinalist based on results of the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which is taken by more than 1.3 million 11th graders each year.
Eldred is one of approximately 16,000 students across the nation who took the PSAT/NMSQT to be named a National Merit Semifinalist for 2026. Eldred will now have the opportunity to fulfill several requirements to be named a finalist in February and potentially earn one of approximately 7,000 National Merit Scholarships that will be awarded next Spring.
At Waconia High School, Eldred is on the girls tennis team, plays the oboe in the high school’s wind ensemble and the tenor saxophone in the marching band. She is also the public address captain of the high school speech team, where she specializes in Informative Speaking and Original Oratory. Eldred is also active in the high school’s Conservation Club and National Honor Society chapter.
BOARD VOTES UNANIMOUSLY TO PLACE $3 MILLION OPERATING LEVY QUESTION ON NOVEMBER BALLOT
The Board voted unanimously to place an operating levy question on the November 2025 ballot, seeking $3 million annually to help maintain the high-quality educational programs and exceptional staff our community values.
If approved by voters, the funds would be used to sustain class sizes, support student programming, and retain high-quality teachers and staff—preserving the strong educational foundation our schools are known for. More information about the operating levy and what it means for our schools and taxpayers will be shared in the coming weeks and months.
ACCOMPLISHED WACONIA EDUCATORS NAMED FOR 2025
The Waconia Education Association has announced that Michael Hamann, Lisa Kalthoff and Wendy Sweeney are the 2025 recipients of the Accomplished Waconia Educators Award. The three recipients will now go on to represent Waconia Public Schools in the 2025-26 Minnesota Teacher of Year program next fall. More than 50 educators were nominated for the award this year.
Hamann is a physics teacher at Waconia High School who is finishing his 16th year of teaching in Waconia. Kalthoff is a fourth grade teacher at Laketown Elementary School who is finishing her 26th year of teaching in Waconia. Sweeney is a second grade teacher at Southview Elementary School who is finishing her 28th year of teaching in Waconia.
