Schools Closed Friday, January 23, 2026
The National Weather Service has placed the Twin Cities Metro Area, including Carver County, under an Extreme Cold Warning until 12:00 p.m. on Friday, January 23. The warning states that our area can expect dangerously cold wind chills as low as minus 35 to minus 45 degrees in the early morning hours, which can cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes.
With the safety of our students and staff in mind, Waconia Public Schools will be closed on Friday, January 23. All early childhood programming is cancelled, including Wildcat Preschool, Early Childhood Screening, ECFE and ECSE classes. KidSpace before and afterschool childcare is also closed.
With a slight warmup in temperatures and wind chills expected throughout the daytime hours, some afterschool activities (after 3 p.m.) at Waconia High School will be permitted such as games and rehearsals. Competitive team practices on Friday will be limited to varsity teams only. Students should expect to hear from their coach or advisor about any potential scheduling changes. Evening activities run through Waconia Community Education are also on as scheduled, unless otherwise communicated. All afterschool and evening activities through the High School and Community Education are on as scheduled for tonight, Thursday, January 22, unless otherwise communicated.
This is the first school cancellation of the 2025-26 school year. In accordance with District policy, after a total of two cancellations, any subsequent weather-related closures will result in the District implementing a flex-learning day. Details and information about flex-learning days can be found on the Teaching and Learning Department website.
